Radiohead Open Account On Weibo - The Chinese Twitter

British rock band Radiohead is one of the first western celebrities to cross the water and enter censored Chinese cyberspace. “Weibo” translates into microblog, and is the Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

As of Friday evening, the band had only posted one message stating “testing the weibo”. The Radiohead account has been verified as genuine as sina.com does check the authenticity of celebrity accounts.

Radiohead are very well known for their opinions on Chinese human rights, and have acted against the Chinese government in the past. Any comments to this nature on Weibo will be deemed offensive and removed.

The government screens the internet for content it considers to be politically sensitive, and other western social media sites including YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, are banned. Charles Chao, the CEO of the site stated a few months ago that more than 100 employees are constantly monitoring content.

It is obvious that Radiohead are popular in China as they soon received a huge following, they now have 49,000 followers; their only post has 4,100 comments and has been reposted nearly 11,000 times.
